Chieen is a contemporary art studio dedicated to preserving and presenting both collective studio works and individual artist portfolios within a unified digital space. The project focused on designing a structured, immersive platform that functions as both an archive and a curated gallery.

The objective was to translate artistic identity into a clear and cohesive online experience — balancing minimal interface design with strong visual storytelling. By establishing hierarchy, navigation clarity, and responsive layouts, the platform supports both institutional credibility and individual creative expression.

THE CHALLENGE

Chieen, a contemporary art studio, required a digital platform that could house both collective studio works and individual artist portfolios within a single cohesive structure. The primary challenge was balancing curatorial elegance with functional clarity — ensuring that the website felt immersive and gallery-like while remaining intuitive and easy to navigate.

Because artistic content varies significantly in format, scale, and visual density, the layout system needed to be flexible without losing consistency. The platform also needed to communicate institutional credibility while preserving the individuality of each represented artist.

MY ROLE

As the sole designer and developer, I was responsible for designing and building the studio’s portfolio website from concept to execution. My role integrated UX strategy, interface design, visual hierarchy development, and front-end implementation.

DESIGN SYSTEM

A major focus of this project was creating a minimal yet adaptable design system capable of supporting diverse visual content. I established consistent typographic hierarchy, spacing logic, and grid structures to allow artworks to remain the primary visual focus without overwhelming the interface.

The layout system was designed to scale across desktop, tablet, and mobile breakpoints, ensuring that imagery retained impact while maintaining readability and structural clarity. Careful attention was given to whitespace, image ratios, and transition pacing to reinforce a refined gallery-like experience.

VARIANTS & GUIDELINES

Interaction behaviors were intentionally restrained to avoid distracting from the artwork. Hover states, transitions, and navigation animations were designed to feel subtle and deliberate, supporting immersion rather than drawing attention to the interface itself.

MAIN TAKEAWAYS

This project strengthened my ability to design for content-first experiences where the interface must support, not compete with, the subject matter. I developed a deeper understanding of curatorial digital design — structuring complex creative material into a cohesive, scalable system.

Ultimately, Chieen reinforced my capacity to translate artistic identity into a refined and functional digital environment that balances aesthetics with usability.
